Chamonix Tourist Guide

Tourist Attraction and sightseeing
Historic Chamonix is a cosmopolitan town full of life and incredible scenery. In summer or winter you can take Europe's highest cable car to Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi reaching 3842m. Passengers can take this cable car from the station at Chamonix to the top, acclimatise to the high altitude in the restaurant and walk around the viewing platforms to see the glaciers and take in the panoramic views of the valley below. It’s well worth the visit (remember to take layers and wrap up warm!)

Take the Montenvers / Mountain Train (which departs near the main Chamonix railway station) to see the spectacular sights of La Mer de Glace glacier (Sea of Ice). From here you catch the cable car  down to the glacier and  the Ice Grotto to see the display of ice sculptures and caves. There is also a lovely alpine restaurant at The Montenvers Hotel with the Montenvers museum next to this.

In the centre of Chamonix you can even see a film at the local cinema with several films in English too.

Shopping
In addition to the Ski season for which Chamonix is famous, there are hundreds of shops ranging from great sports shops to funky clothes outlets, gift shops, home made chocolates and delicious deli’s selling an assortment of saucissons, cheeses and wine!

In Chamonix there is a local market on Saturday morning - selling a wide range of local produce. Plus weekly markets at nearby Sallanches, St Gervais and Samoen.

For those of you who fancy a flutter at Roulette or Black Jack, Chamonix has its very own Casino right in the town square.

Chamonix is approx. 1 - 1½ hour drive from Geneva Airport and is very close to both the Swiss and Italian borders which make day trips to other winter / summer resorts very easy. Especially Italy just through the Mont Blanc Tunnel!
